Why Every Church Plant Needs a Temporary Board
Before a church plant has members, elders, or a permanent leadership structure, it still needs wise governance. That is where a temporary board comes in.
A temporary board is not your future elder board, launch team, or a circle of friends who approve everything you suggest. It is a short-term governing body that provides legal oversight, financial accountability, and wisdom during the church’s earliest stage. Think of it as scaffolding: essential while the church is being built, but removed once the structure can stand on its own.
A church plant should establish this board before incorporating, opening a bank account, filing for tax-exempt status, or setting the planter’s compensation. Three to five people is usually enough. Look for spiritually mature, financially responsible leaders who understand ministry and have enough relational distance to ask hard questions. Experienced church planters, sending-church elders, denominational leaders, and Christian nonprofit leaders can be strong candidates.
What does the board do?
It approves foundational documents such as the Articles of Incorporation and bylaws, authorizes compensation, signs necessary legal and banking documents, records official minutes, and establishes early financial policies. Just as importantly, it provides spiritual and leadership accountability—helping the planter remain healthy, focused, and above reproach.
“Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers” (Proverbs 11:14, NLT). That wisdom applies directly to church planting.
The temporary board should usually serve for two to three years, until the church has established membership, developed qualified local leaders, and stabilized its financial and ministry rhythms. Then it should intentionally transfer authority to the permanent governance structure defined in the bylaws.
Your first board is not a legal formality. It is a trusted foundation that protects the planter, strengthens donor confidence, and helps the church launch with wisdom, integrity, accountability, and credibility from day one.
